The Barraquer Ophthalmology Center houses the first eye bank in Europe, founded in 1962 by Professor Barraquer. Barraquer is one of the largest eye clinics in the world and a reference center for corneal transplants. Each year, 30 doctors from different specialties perform 9,000 surgeries and 5,000 laser treatments. Barraquer is the first center in Spain to implement the new and revolutionary artificial vision chip.

Professor Joaquín Barraquer Moner

He studied medicine at the University of Barcelona graduating in 1951 and obtaining a doctorate in Madrid in 1955. In 1957 he obtained the title of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Guayaquil (Ecuador) and in 1965 from the University of Bogotá (Colombia ). In 1970 he was appointed Professor of Ocular Surgery at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He is “Doctor Honoris Causa” and Honorary Professor of 11 national and foreign universities, he has been awarded with 6 distinctions and scientific prizes in Spain and 28 abroad. From the clinical point of view, the work of Professor Joaquín Barraquer was centered mainly in four fields: corneal transplants, and cataract, glaucoma and myopia surgery.
